Display Energy Certificates (DECs)

The requirement to display a valid Display Energy Certificate (DEC) in all public buildings of more than 1000m2came into effect on 1 October 2008.These include buildings occupied by public authority and institutions providing public service to a large number of people and where large numbers of these people visit.

DECs illustrate the actual energy use of a building as well as the Operational Rating. This is founded on the energy consumption of the building based on it’s actual usage of gas, electricity and readings from other meters. The DEC  should be clearly displayed in a prominent place, allowing the public to see the energy efficiency of the building.

The DEC is accompanied by an advisory report that lists the cost effective measures to improve the energy rating of the building. This report is valid for seven years.

Currently DEC’s are only required in public buildings over 1000m2. However, the requirement is being extended to all public buildings of more than 250m2 in December 2010.
